Join host Dr. Chase Hendrickson, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, regular contributor and expert educator Dr. Ashok Balasubramanyam, Professor of Medicine for Endocrinology at Baylor College of Medicine, and invited topical expert Dr. Irl Hirsch, Professor of Medicine and Diabetes Treatment and Teaching Chair at the University of Washington, as they discuss a recent article from The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), “Improvement in A1c Levels in Early Adulthood in T1D Exchange: Impact of Racial, Socioeconomic, and Clinical Factors.”

Meet the Speakers

Irl Hirsch and Ashok Balasubramanyam

Irl B. Hirsch, MD, MACP received his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1984. He completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Miami, in Miami, Florida and Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Florida and a research fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Hirsch’s career has focused on studying the best strategies for the use of insulin therapy in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. More recently, he has become involved with artificial pancreas technology and better understanding on the limitations of diabetes biomarkers. With regards to patient care, most patients in his practice have type 1 diabetes or atypical forms of diabetes. Over the years, he has been a passionate advocate for patients ensuring access and affordability for glucose monitoring technology and in the past decade, insulin. Dr. Hirsch has authored more than 250 research papers, more than 60 editorials (including The New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA), and numerous book chapters in addition to six books for patients and physicians. Dr. Hirsch is the former chair of the Professional Practice Committee for the American Diabetes Association and has served as editor-in-chief of two ADA journals, Clinical Diabetes and DOC News. He is an Associate Editor of Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics and has been on the editorial board of Diabetes Care. In 2018 he was presented the Laureate Award, Outstanding Public Service award for the Endocrine Society. He has also served as a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Ashok Balasubramanyam, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Balasubramanyam received his clinical and research training at Baylor and at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.He serves as Vice President for Academic Integration at Baylor and Chief Academic Officer of Baylor-St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Texas Division of the Catholic Health Initiatives network.Dr. Balasubramanyam’s research focuses on the causes of complex metabolic diseases - he holds the Rutherford Chair in Diabetes Research and is known for his work in identifying and characterizing atypical forms of diabetes and disorders of adipose tissue. He is principal investigator of the RADIANT (Rare and Atypical Diabetes Network) project, a consortium funded by the National Institutes of Health to discover and determine the causes of new forms of diabetes, and a member of the Baylor center for the NIH’s Undiagnosed Diseases Network.He has been deeply involved in education at every level of clinical and research training, and currently serves as director of Baylor’s Clinical Scientist Training Program. Dr. Balasubramanyam also serves as Chair of the American Board of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, and a Councilor of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
