The endocrinology pipeline is facing significant challenges.
Since 2010, there has been a 78% increase in the number of fellowship positions, while the number of U.S. MD medical school graduates applying to endocrinology has fallen by 4%. This July, fewer than one-third of first-year endocrine fellows will be from a U.S. medical school. If our field is to thrive, we need more of our students to become our colleagues.

Our Medical School Engagement Program (MSEP) provides a way for leaders like you to encourage medical student interest in endocrinology and recognize your best and brightest learners with opportunities to engage with leaders in our field. Our goal is to provide you with the resources and opportunities to show your students the clinical and intellectual vibrancy of endocrinology and put some of them on the path to becoming colleagues.
Here's how we can help.
In the program’s first year (2024), the Endocrine Society will provide five medical schools with support for endocrinology-focused initiatives to:
Establish Endocrinology Interest Groups for medical students: Providing funding to support faculty-led sessions highlighting the best of endocrine practice and research.
Fund two Excellence in Endocrinology awards at each institution, for a pre-clinical and a more senior medical student.
Support attendance at ENDO for each award winner, where they will participate in Endocrine Mentor Day and meet with Society leaders.

Build lasting relationships with strong candidates interested in endocrinology at your institution.
Provide faculty with rewarding teaching opportunities outside the usual clinical setting.
Increase the number of students participating in endocrinology rotations.
Access curated Endocrine Society educational resources including content curated to supplement local curricula and teaching.
Receive complimentary Endocrine Society membership for participating students at awarded institutions.

Application Guidelines
$3,000 in annual funding to support the establishment of a faculty-led Endocrinology Interest Group for pre-clinical and clinical medical students, and to support monthly faculty-led sessions highlighting the best of endocrine practice and research.
Plug and play resources to support the recruitment of medical students.
Access to curated Endocrine Society educational resources including curriculum templates, education, and webinars to supplement local curricula and teaching.
Administrative support for the awarding of two annual Endocrine Society Excellence in Endocrinology awards, for a pre-clinical and clinical medical student.
Complimentary Registration and travel costs for ENDO 2024 for each Excellence in Endocrinology award winner, where they will participate in Endocrine Mentor Day and meet with Society leaders.
Endocrine divisions at US medical schools with endocrinology fellowship programs offering two or more fellowship positions each year are encouraged to apply.
Five two-year MSEP grants will be awarded with a start date of Sept 1, 2024.
Principal Investigator: Endocrinology Division Chief
Program Lead: Endocrinology division faculty member responsible for the administration of the program, coordination of activities, and outcomes reporting.
Other faculty and fellows: The program lead may identify other division members to facilitate monthly Endocrinology Interest Group activities. Each awardee will determine the appropriate mix of faculty necessary for MSEP’s success at their institution.

Commitment from the Endocrinology Division Chief to:
Support faculty time for the implementation of the MSEP for the two-year award period. (Successful programs will be eligible for longer-term funding.)
Support the awarding of two medical student Excellence in Endocrinology Awards each year.
Report program outcomes: Summary of yearly outreach activities, reporting on participation in monthly interest group sessions throughout the award period, and descriptions of best practices and challenges identified for interest group implementation.
Host annual site visit with Endocrine Society program staff.
Applicants will be notified of the decision regarding their application by May 1, 2024.
The initial award will be for two years. Institutions meeting program deliverables outlined here and demonstrating sustainable programming will be eligible for MSEP grant renewals.
